STUDYING IMPULSIVITY
Understanding the role of impulsivity in decision making and behavior
I got my mind on my research, my research on my mind.
(If you know, you know)
During my time at the University of Texas, I worked as a research assistant in the Similarity and Cognition Lab run by Dr. Art Markman. The lab runs studies focused on how people use categorization and comparison to perceive the world, and how these methods of comparison affect other aspects of cognition. I worked alongside a PhD candidate on his research about impulsivity and decision making, using cued go/no-go and 'fun card' tasks.
Cognitive Psychology Research Study at the University of Texas Similarity and Cognition Lab
Role: Research Assistant
Skills I learned:
-
How to run participant studies
-
Quantitative research methods
-
Data collection & analysis
-
Experiment design
-
How to work with a research team
Key takeaways:
-
Running academic research studies is very time intensive and takes a lot of dedication and work to see it through.
-
Sometimes the results you get aren't what you wanted or expected, but you have to be adaptable and critical of the data and experiment design.
I am happy to talk more in person about my time at this lab, but I cannot provide specifics of the experiments I helped conduct due to the confidentiality of the research.
